Ramakien

1797 · 18th century

The Ramakien is the Thai national version of the Indian epic Ramayana. Older versions were lost with the fall of Ayutthaya in 1767, and the standard text was composed in 1797 under the direction of King Rama I. It adapts the story of Rama to Thai settings and Buddhist values, is depicted in the murals of the Temple of the Emerald Buddha and provides the stories for khon masked dance-drama.
