Rock of Dunamase

The Rock of Dunamase is a limestone outcrop in County Laois, Ireland, crowned by the ruins of a castle. A fortress there was plundered by Vikings in 845 and later held by the kings of Leinster. After the Anglo-Norman invasion it passed by marriage to Strongbow and then to the Marshal family, who built the stone castle; it was in ruins by the 17th century.
