Roman annexation of Syria

63 BCE ยท 1st century BCE

The Roman annexation of Syria took place in 63 BCE, when the Roman general Pompey deposed the last Seleucid rulers and organised Syria as a Roman province. By then the Seleucid state had been reduced to a small, divided remnant around Antioch. The event marked the formal end of the Seleucid Empire, which had once stretched from the Aegean to Central Asia.
