Rosa Luxemburg

1871–1919 · 20th century · Also known as Róża Luksemburg

Rosa Luxemburg was a Polish and naturalised-German Marxist theorist and revolutionary, a leading theorist of the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD). Born in Russian-ruled Poland to a secular Jewish family, she co-founded the Social Democracy of the Kingdom of Poland and Lithuania and moved to Germany in 1898. In Social Reform or Revolution? (1900) she answered the reformism of Eduard Bernstein, and in The Accumulation of Capital (1913) she tied imperialism to capitalism's need to expand. Imprisoned for most of World War I for opposing it, she co-founded the Spartacus League and the Communist Party of Germany, and was killed by the Freikorps after the Spartacist uprising of 1919.
