Rotterdam
Rotterdam is the second-largest city of the Netherlands, on the Nieuwe Maas in the delta of the Rhine and Meuse. It received city rights in 1340 and grew with the Nieuwe Waterweg of 1872 into the largest port in Europe, handling much of the trade of Germany's Rhineland. German bombing destroyed its centre on 14 May 1940, and it was rebuilt as a city of modern architecture.
