Royal Greenland Trading Department

1776 · 18th century · Also known as Kongelige Grønlandske Handel

The Royal Greenland Trading Department (Kongelige Grønlandske Handel) was a Danish state enterprise founded in 1776 that held a monopoly on trade with Greenland. It ran the trading stations, supplied the settlements and bought seal products and fish, and for long periods also administered the colonies, keeping Greenland closed to outsiders until its monopoly ended in 1950.
