Rurikovo Gorodishche

Also known as Gorodishche

Rurikovo Gorodishche is an archaeological site on the Volkhov river about two kilometres south of Novgorod in north-western Russia. Occupied from the 9th century, it was an early trading and princely centre with strong Scandinavian links, traditionally associated with Rurik. After Novgorod grew up nearby, it remained the residence of the princes whom the city invited to rule.
