Safaviyya

Also known as Safaviyya Sufi order, Safaviyya order

The Safaviyya was a Sufi religious order founded by Safi al-Din Ardabili in Ardabil in north-western Iran in the late thirteenth or early fourteenth century. Over time it became increasingly militant and Shia in orientation and gained a devoted following among Turkmen tribes known as the Qizilbash. The order's leaders used this following to found the Safavid state in 1501.
