Safi al-Din Ardabili

1252–1334 · 14th century

Safi al-Din Ardabili (1252–1334) was a Sufi master from Ardabil in north-western Iran and the founder of the Safaviyya order. His shrine in Ardabil became a major religious centre. The Safavid dynasty took its name from him, and accounts of the Safavid Empire trace the empire's origins to the order he established.
