c. 689–759 · 8th century · Also known as Otmar of Saint Gall

Othmar was an Alemannic priest who in 719 founded the Abbey of Saint Gall at the site of the hermit Gallus's cell and became its first abbot. He introduced the Benedictine rule and founded a hospital and a home for lepers. In a dispute with Frankish counts over the abbey's lands he was imprisoned and died in exile on the island of Werd in the Rhine in 759.
