Sauk

Also known as Sac people

The Sauk, or Sac, are an Algonquian-speaking people of the western Great Lakes, closely allied with the Meskwaki. Pushed west from Michigan and Wisconsin, they settled along the upper Mississippi, where a disputed land cession of 1804 led to the Black Hawk War of 1832. Their descendants belong to the Sac and Fox nations of Oklahoma and of Kansas and Nebraska.
