Saverne

Also known as Zabern

Saverne (German Zabern) is a town in Alsace, France, where the road from Strasbourg crosses the Vosges into Lorraine. After 1262 it was the main residence of the bishops of Strasbourg, whose great Château des Rohan was rebuilt there from 1779. In May 1525 Duke Antoine of Lorraine destroyed a peasant army near the town during the German Peasants' War, and in 1913 incidents with the German garrison caused the Zabern Affair.
