Savonia

Also known as Savo

Savonia, Savo in Finnish, is a historical province of eastern Finland, a landscape of lakes and forests around Mikkeli and Kuopio. Its people practised slash-and-burn farming and spread far beyond the province, settling in central Finland, Värmland in Sweden and Ingria. It was long a frontier of the Swedish realm facing Russia and was crossed by wars into the 18th century.
