Schengen Agreement

1985 · 20th century

The Schengen Agreement is a treaty signed on 14 June 1985 at Schengen in Luxembourg by Belgium, France, West Germany, Luxembourg and the Netherlands to abolish checks at their common borders gradually. A convention of 1990 implemented it, and checks were lifted from 1995. Incorporated into EU law by the Treaty of Amsterdam in 1999, the Schengen Area now covers most of Europe, including some states outside the Union.
