Schmalkalden

Schmalkalden is a town in south-western Thuringia, Germany, on the south-western slopes of the Thuringian Forest, long known for iron and steel working. Shared for centuries between the counts of Henneberg and the landgraves of Hesse, it gave its name to the Schmalkaldic League of Protestant princes, formed there in 1531, and to Luther's Smalcald Articles of 1537.
