Second Anglo-Afghan War
The Second Anglo-Afghan War was fought from 1878 to 1880 between British India and the Emirate of Afghanistan, after the emir Sher Ali Khan received a Russian mission. British forces occupied much of the country and imposed the Treaty of Gandamak in 1879, but the murder of the British envoy in Kabul and the defeat at Maiwand prolonged the war. Britain withdrew after recognising Abdur Rahman Khan as emir, keeping control of Afghan foreign policy.
