Serabit el-Khadim

Serabit el-Khadim is an ancient site in south-western Sinai where Egyptians mined turquoise from the Middle Kingdom onwards. Its temple of Hathor, 'Lady of Turquoise', was enlarged over many centuries. Inscriptions left there by Semitic-speaking workers, the Proto-Sinaitic inscriptions, are among the earliest alphabetic writing.
