Sergius of Radonezh

c. 1314–1392 · 14th century

Sergius of Radonezh was a Russian monk who founded the Trinity Monastery north-east of Moscow around the 1340s and became the most venerated saint of medieval Russia. He revived communal monastic life, and his disciples founded dozens of monasteries across the northern forests. Tradition holds that he blessed Dmitry Donskoy before the Battle of Kulikovo in 1380; his monastery became one of the great religious and landowning centres of Muscovy.
