Shabwa
Shabwa was the capital of the ancient Kingdom of Hadramawt, on the edge of the desert in what is now southern Yemen. Caravans of frankincense had to pass through its walled town, where priests took a tithe for the god Sayin, according to Pliny the Elder. The Sabaeans sacked it in the early 3rd century CE, and it declined after the Himyarite conquest. A modern governorate of Yemen bears its name.
