1785–1842 · 19th century

Shah Shuja Durrani was a ruler of the Durrani Empire, reigning from 1803 to 1809 and again from 1839 to 1842. Driven out by his brother Shah Mahmud and the Barakzai chiefs, he lived for decades in exile in British India. The British restored him to the throne in the First Anglo-Afghan War, but he was assassinated in Kabul in 1842 after their retreat.
