Shangjing of Liao

918–1120 · 10th century · Also known as Liao Supreme Capital, Liao Shangjing, Linhuang

Shangjing, the Supreme Capital, was the principal capital of the Khitan Liao dynasty, founded by Abaoji in 918 in present-day Bairin Left Banner, Inner Mongolia. It had a northern city for the Khitan court and a southern city for Han Chinese and other subjects. The Jurchen Jin captured it in 1120 during their conquest of the Liao, and its walls and foundations survive as an archaeological site.
