Sharaf al-Din Qaraqush

d. c. 1212 · 13th century

Sharaf al-Din Qaraqush was an Armenian-born mamluk who carved out a domain in Tripolitania and southern Ifriqiya. A follower of Taqi al-Din, nephew of Saladin, he led Turkish and Ghuzz troops west from Egypt around 1172, seized Tripoli, Gabès and other towns, and allied with the Banu Ghaniya against the Almohads. Repeatedly defeated by Almohad forces, he was driven into the Libyan interior, where he was killed around 1212.
