Shimazu Toshihisa

1537–1592 · 16th century

Shimazu Toshihisa was a samurai commander of the Shimazu clan of Satsuma, the third of the four brothers who led the clan's conquest of most of Kyushu. He fought in the campaigns of the 1570s and 1580s and opposed submission to Toyotomi Hideyoshi. After a rising by a Shimazu retainer in 1592, Hideyoshi held him responsible and ordered his death, and he took his own life.
