Siege of Pelium

335 BCE · 4th century BCE · Also known as Battle of Pelium

The Siege of Pelium was fought in 335 BCE when Alexander the Great attacked the Illyrian king Cleitus at the fortress of Pelion on the western border of Macedon. The arrival of the Taulantian king Glaukias threatened to trap the Macedonians, but Alexander withdrew by a bold manoeuvre and then routed the Illyrians in a night attack. The victory secured his western frontier before he marched on Thebes.
