Sinjar
Sinjar is a town in north-western Iraq at the southern foot of the Sinjar Mountains, west of Mosul. In the Middle Ages it was a fortified city on the route from Mosul to Syria, held by Zengid atabegs in the twelfth and early thirteenth centuries. The region is a heartland of the Yazidis, who suffered genocide there at the hands of the Islamic State in 2014.
