Solon

c. 630–c. 560 BCE · 6th century BCE

Solon was an Athenian statesman, lawgiver and poet. As archon in 594 BCE he cancelled the debts that had reduced poor Athenians to bondage, banned enslavement for debt and divided citizens into property classes for political office. His reforms laid foundations for later Athenian democracy, and tradition made him one of the Seven Sages of Greece.
