Spahis

1834–1962 · 19th century

The Spahis were light cavalry regiments of the French Army recruited mainly among the Arab and Berber populations of North Africa, first organised in Algeria in 1834. Their name came from the Ottoman sipahi cavalry. Spahi units served in French colonial campaigns, in the Franco-Prussian War and in both world wars, and were also raised in Tunisia, Morocco and Senegal.
