Stefan Lazarević

c. 1377–1427 · 15th century

Stefan Lazarević was the son of Prince Lazar, who fell at the Battle of Kosovo in 1389. He ruled Moravian Serbia as an Ottoman vassal and fought for the sultan at Ankara in 1402, after which Byzantium granted him the title of despot. He rebuilt Belgrade as his capital, drew wealth from silver mines and was himself a writer; on his death in 1427 the Serbian Despotate passed to his nephew Đurađ Branković.
