Ston
Ston is a small town on the isthmus joining the Pelješac peninsula to the Croatian mainland, north-west of Dubrovnik. It belonged to the principality of Hum until 1333, when the Republic of Ragusa bought it with Pelješac and fortified it with some five kilometres of walls, among the longest in Europe. Its salt pans, worked since antiquity, were a major source of Ragusan revenue.
