Stuart Restoration

1660 · 17th century · Also known as Restoration of 1660, English Restoration

The Stuart Restoration was the return of the monarchy in England, Scotland and Ireland in 1660, when Charles II came back from exile after the collapse of the Commonwealth and Protectorate. In Scotland it revived the separate parliament, Privy Council and bishops, leading to conflict with the Presbyterian Covenanters. The term also names the period of Charles II's reign, known for its theatre and science.
