Sulaiman Badrul Alam Shah

1699–1760 · 18th century

Sulaiman Badrul Alam Shah was sultan of Johor and Riau from 1722 to 1760. A son of Abdul Jalil IV, he was placed on the throne by Bugis warriors who drove out Raja Kecil of Siak. In return the Bugis took the new office of Yang Dipertuan Muda, or viceroy, and held real power, while Riau grew into a thriving port of the Malay world during his reign.
