Sumatra Treaty

1871 · 19th century · Also known as Anglo-Dutch Treaty of 1871

The Sumatra Treaty was an agreement signed by Britain and the Netherlands in November 1871. Britain dropped its objection to Dutch expansion in northern Sumatra, which the treaty of 1824 had limited by recognising Aceh's independence, in return for equal trading rights there; a linked treaty transferred the Dutch Gold Coast to Britain. It cleared the way for the Dutch attack on Aceh in 1873.
