Surena

d. c. 52 BCE · 1st century BCE

Surena was a Parthian general of the House of Suren in the service of King Orodes II. In 53 BCE at Carrhae, using horse archers kept supplied with arrows by a camel train and heavy cataphract cavalry, he destroyed a much larger Roman army under Marcus Licinius Crassus, who was killed. Soon afterwards Orodes, apparently fearing his power, had him put to death.
