Surb Karapet Monastery

Also known as Glak Monastery, Monastery of Saint John the Precursor

Surb Karapet, the Monastery of the Holy Forerunner, stood near Muş in the historic Armenian district of Taron. Tradition holds that Gregory the Illuminator founded it in the 4th century to house relics of John the Baptist, and it became one of the most revered pilgrimage sites of Armenia. It was abandoned and destroyed after the genocide of 1915.
