Svatopluk I of Moravia

c. 840–894 · 9th century · Also known as Svatopluk the Great

Svatopluk I was ruler of Great Moravia from 870 to 894, under whom the state reached its greatest extent, including Bohemia, parts of southern Poland and Pannonia. He came to power by betraying his uncle Rastislav to the Franks and later favoured the Latin clergy, expelling the disciples of Methodius after 885. After his death his sons quarrelled and Hungarian attacks destroyed the state.
