Tarsus
Tarsus is a city in southern Turkey, in the Cilician plain on the Berdan (ancient Cydnus) river near the Mediterranean. An ancient city, it was the capital of the kingdom of Cilicia and later of the Roman province of Cilicia, and it was the birthplace of the apostle Paul. In the early Islamic centuries it was a fortified Abbasid frontier base against Byzantium until Nikephoros II captured it in 965.
