Tatar ASSR

1920–1990 · 20th century · Also known as Tatar Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic

The Tatar Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic was an autonomous republic within the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic, created in May 1920 with Kazan as its capital. It replaced earlier plans for a larger Tatar-Bashkir state and covered only part of the Volga Tatar population. In 1990 it declared sovereignty and became the Republic of Tatarstan.
