Tatmadaw
The Tatmadaw is the name of Myanmar's armed forces. Tracing their origin to the Burma Independence Army of 1941, they have fought ethnic and communist insurgencies almost without pause since independence in 1948 and have dominated politics, ruling directly or through a military-backed party from 1962 to 2011 and again since the coup of 2021. The 2008 constitution reserved a quarter of parliamentary seats for them.
