Teatro San Cassiano

1637–1812 · 17th century

The Teatro San Cassiano in Venice was the first public opera house in the world, opened in 1637 by the Tron family, where audiences paid for admission instead of attending by invitation at court. Its success led to many more commercial opera houses in Venice, which became the leading centre of opera in the 17th century. The theatre was demolished in 1812.
