Nearby lay Haruppeshvara, the capital of the Mlechchha dynasty of Kamarupa, and the area holds early remains such as the carved stone doorframe of Da Parbatia. Legend connects it with the story of Usha and Aniruddha and the demon king Bana. It is now a district headquarters.
