Thabo Mbeki
Thabo Mbeki is a South African politician who was president of South Africa from 1999 to 2008, succeeding Nelson Mandela. A leading ANC diplomat in exile, he presided over steady economic growth and promoted an "African Renaissance", but his questioning of the scientific consensus on HIV/AIDS was widely condemned. Defeated by Jacob Zuma for the ANC leadership at Polokwane in 2007, he was recalled in 2008.
