Thirty-Three Orientals

1825 · 19th century · Also known as Treinta y Tres Orientales

The Thirty-Three Orientals were a band of exiles from the Banda Oriental who, led by Juan Antonio Lavalleja, crossed from Buenos Aires province in April 1825 to rise against Brazilian rule. Their landing sparked a revolt across the province, and a congress at Florida declared independence from Brazil and union with the United Provinces of the Río de la Plata in August 1825. The resulting Cisplatine War ended with Uruguayan independence.
