Thomas Aquinas

1225–1274 · 13th century

Thomas Aquinas was a thirteenth-century Italian Dominican friar and theologian, the most influential philosopher of medieval scholasticism. His synthesis of Christian theology and Aristotelian philosophy drew on Latin translations of Aristotle and of commentaries by Muslim thinkers. The commentaries of Ibn Rushd (Averroes), written under Almohad patronage, influenced Aquinas and the course of medieval Western thought.
