Augustine of Hippo

354–430 · 5th century · Also known as Aurelius Augustinus, Saint Augustine

Augustine of Hippo was a Christian theologian and bishop from Roman North Africa, born at Thagaste in Numidia. After teaching rhetoric in Carthage, Rome and Milan, he converted to Christianity in 386 and became bishop of Hippo Regius in 395, where he wrote against the Donatists and Pelagians. His Confessions and City of God made him the most influential of the Latin Church Fathers, and his remains rest at Pavia.
