Person
Thulare I
Thulare was king of the Pedi in the north-east of present-day South Africa in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Through conquest and alliances he made the Pedi the paramount power over many smaller chiefdoms of the Steelpoort and Olifants valleys. His death, dated by tradition to a solar eclipse in 1824, was followed by succession disputes and the invasions of the Mfecane period.
