Tomato
The tomato is a fruit-bearing plant native to the Americas that spread to Europe and the rest of the world after the Spanish conquests of the sixteenth century. It became a staple of many cuisines. Accounts of the Spanish Empire list it, alongside maize, potato, cassava and sweet potato, among the American crops whose global diffusion was one of the empire's most consequential contributions to world history.
