Treaty of Desmichels

1834 · 19th century · Part of the French conquest of Algeria

The Treaty of Desmichels was signed in February 1834 between Emir Abdelkader and General Louis Alexis Desmichels, the French commander at Oran. It established peace in western Algeria and, in its Arabic version, recognised Abdelkader's authority over the interior and his control of trade, while France held the coastal towns. Paris disowned its more generous terms, and fighting resumed in 1835.
