Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius

Also known as Trinity-Sergius Lavra

The Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius is the most important monastery of the Russian Orthodox Church, at Sergiyev Posad north-east of Moscow. Founded by Sergius of Radonezh around the 1340s, it became a great landowner and a centre of learning and art, for which Andrei Rublev painted his Trinity icon. Its walls withstood a Polish-Lithuanian siege of 1608–1610, and it is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
