Tughril III

d. 1194 · 12th century

Tughril III was the last Seljuk sultan of Iraq and western Iran, reigning from 1176 to 1194. For most of his reign real power lay with the Eldiguzid atabegs of Azerbaijan, who had placed him on the throne. His attempts to rule in his own right led to imprisonment and further conflict, and in 1194 he was defeated and killed near Ray by the Khwarazmshah Tekish, ending Seljuk rule in Iran.
