Turkestan Commission

1919 · 20th century · Also known as Turkkomissiya

The Turkestan Commission was a body sent by the Soviet government in Moscow to Tashkent in 1919 to take control of the Turkestan ASSR, which had been cut off during the civil war. Its members, including Mikhail Frunze and Valerian Kuibyshev, curbed the chauvinism of Russian settler communists, brought Muslim communists such as Turar Ryskulov into government and directed the war against the Basmachi. It prepared the way for direct Soviet control of Central Asia.
